The Unknown Arts

F or my web page project, I decided to focus on the country of the Philippines. I wanted to do this nation because I am a Filipino-American and I wanted to show that even though Filipinos aren't much known for their art, that they do have critically acclaimed pieces. The pieces I'm going to talk about is the sculpture, the Bonifacio Monument, the painting called the Spolarium, and the Banig, a weaved mat.

The first art piece I'm going to talk about is the sculpture called the Bonifacio Monument. I chose this piece because it is one of the most famous Filipino sculptures in the Philippines. The artist of this piece is Guillermo Tolentino. This is a group sculpture made out of a number of figures surrounding a central object. The main figure of this sculpture is Andres Bonifacio. Andres was the leader of the revolution against Spain in 1896. This revolt was called the Katipunan. The man behind Andres Bonifacio is Emilio Jacinto, the general of the Katipunan. The Bonifacio Monument was completed in 1933 and is made out of rock. Guillermo Tolentino lived from 1890-1976.

The next piece I'm going to talk about is the painting called the Spolarium. The Spolarium is courtesy of the Filipino artist, Juan Luna. Luna's painting was not only acclaimed in the Philippines, but in Europe as well. This was one of the first paintings to be commended outside of the Philippines. This painting was completed towards the end of Spain's rule in the Philippines. This painting paid off for Juan Luna because in 1884, Mr. Luna won a gold medal at the Exposicion Nacional de Belllas Artes for the Spolarium. This painting depicts fallen soldiers pulled to a pile of corpses in a Roman arena.

My last piece of art is called the Banig. The Banig is just another name for a mat. The Philippine mat shows the careful, intricate, and artistic skills of the native weaver. The Samal mat is named after the Samal Muslims that occupy the island of Tawi-Tawi. The Banig is made from the leaves of the pandanus plant, which is very abundant in the country.

In conclusion, I hope you were well informed of the pieces I chose for my web page project. I hope you enjoy my paper and the images I contributed to the class.
