Crowned Buddha Shakyamuni India, Bihar; Pala period, 11th century Schist At the moment before Shakyamuni's enlightenment, the meditating Buddha-to-be was attacked by evil forces who challenged his right to seek enlightenment. Reaching down to touch the ground, Shakyamuni called upon the Earth to validate his quest. The gesture is depicted in this stone relief sculpture. Such steles are found in niches in architectural monuments or shrines. |
