Design and English Class Collaboration

What you are about to see is the product of a joint venture of two classes at the City College of San Francisco: Basic Design taught by Mine Ternar and Beginning Composition and Reading taught by Susan Zimmerman. The two groups of students have never met but the English students wrote brief descriptions of their lives and personal goals; the Design students then shaped pages around these texts. A vast majority of the images used in this site are designed by the Art 125A Basic Design Students. They explored the medium of collage in designing posters on the subject of their own personal goals, then scanned their posters for use in the web pages. Until now, the Basic Design students at the City College had worked in traditional media in studying design an color principles. This project was an experimentation in the integration of new technology to the curriculum of the Basic Design class, and was realized with support by a federal Title III grant. In the course of the design process the art students became curious about the writers of the texts and were invited to write brief responses to the English 90 authors. The English 90 students had submitted short summaries of their goals in attending C.C.S.F., a topic that fit into the central theme of their class, "Jobs of the Future," an exploration of economic trends and job markets. These pages represent a step in the exploration of personal goals for the English 90 students and a foray into cyber-design on the part of the Art 125A students. Here they are:
